How-To Install a Bulkhead

Install your DIY kitchen like a professional today!

A bulkhead is used to connect cabinetry to the ceiling.

The make up of your bulkhead depends on the layout of the kitchen. We’ve used an L-shape to show the different corner applications.

How-To Install a Bulkhead Panel

1

Start by mitring one end of the bulkhead panel at a 45 degree angle

a) Measure the length required, including a 50mm extension, to allow the other bulk head internal angle piece to butt up to it
b) Do a straight cut at the other end of the bulkhead panel
The straight cut is hidden in the internal right angle, while the mitre finishes the external angle

c) Set the bulkhead back approximately 2mm from the front of the carcase
Screw up through the top of the upper cabinets using 45mm screws, into the bulkhead panel

2

Next, do the end bulkhead panel

An end bulkhead requires additional packing, as you cannot screw up thorugh the upper cabinet into the bulkhead. To do this, you can use an offcut.
a) Cut the offcut to size, and secure it down into the top of the upper cabinet. Set it back flush with the back of the mitre on the front bulkhead panel already installed

b) Mitre the end bulkhead piece at one end

c) Measure the length required, and trim the other end at a straight cut to fit

Check the end piece fits

d) Apply PVA glue along the bottom, and the mitred edge

e) Place the bulkhead piece firmly in position, and tape to secure while the glue sets

Wipe off excess glue

Also tape at the back to secure the panel against the offcut

3

Next, do your second long bulkhead piece.

a) Start by mitring one end
b) Measure the length required, and cut a straight end at the other

c) Set the bulkhead back approx 2mm from the front of the carcase, butted into the end of the first piece installed

d) Screw up through the top of the upper cabinets using 45mm screws, into the bulkhead panel

4

Repeat the same process for the other bulkhead end panel.

a) Secure an offcut to the top of the upper cabinet, set back flush with the back of the existing mitre
b) Mitre the end bulkhead piece at one end

c) Measure the length required, and trim the other end at a straight cut to fit

Check the end piece fits

d) Apply PVA glue along the bottom, and the mitred edge

Wipe off excess glue and tape the mitre and against the wall to secure

Refer to glue setting times for how long to leave the tape on

Do not leave the tape on for an excess amount of time, as it may damage the board

Key Tips

  • Measure twice, cut once!
  • Bulkheads can be made from cabinetry panels, with mitred corners. Or, they can be made from MDF, and painted to match your wall colour. MDF bulkheads can be mitred, or butt joined.
  • If you are using mitres and your product is single sided, make sure you mitre the right angle, with the short side of the mitre at the back.
  • When installing, slowly move the bulkhead back into place. It will continue to stand upright wedged between the cabinet and the ceiling.
  • If the gap between the cabinet and the ceiling is over 300mm, you may need to secure timber blocks for support, to stop the bulkhead panel fallng backwards during installation.
