Do It Yourself

Turn your kitchen from drab to fab in eight easy steps
Turn your budget-conscious kitchen upgrade into a success story that punches above its weight in terms of style.
You can give any kitchen a modern makeover that won’t cost the earth via a do-it-yourself model from U-Install-it Kitchens, a DIY brand manufactured by Farquhar Kitchens.
Darren Farquhar of Farquhar Kitchen Centre says: “I think reality television has re-educated the consumer’s way of thinking to I can do it myself.”
And it only takes eight steps to get a new kitchen.
Firstly, Darren says define your space. “Ask how you can use the space better and consider walkways, windows, location of water, electricity and waste pipes,” he says.
Next, inspire your space. Cut pictures out of magazines to help inspire your design ideas, taking note of cupboard types, finishes and colours.
Step three is to measure up. “Measure twice, cut once is the principal rule of thumb here,” he says. Take into account the height and width of all walls, doors, windows, floor space, appliances and any furniture nearby.
Design your kitchen next “using the U-Install-It Kitchens catalogue to guide you through the selection of cabinets, individual pricing, accessories and layouts”. “If you’re still not sure if you have got it right, don’t worry as U-Install-It Kitchens staff will help you with ensuring it all comes together when you come to place your order,” says Darren. That’s step five.
Step six is to order the kitchen, followed by preparing your renovation area.
Finally, using your DIY skills and knowledge, it’s time to install the kitchen and complete plumbing and electrical work.
Darren says the U-Install-It Kitchen range can be ordered flat-packed or fully assembled at no extra charge. Colour ranges and finishes are extensive and cabinetry sizes are adjustable.
